Attract Tomorrow’s Water/Wastewater Workforce Today
For more than two decades, we’ve been anticipating a major exodus of baby boomers from the US workforce, which was expected to ripple through the water/wastewater industry shortly after the start of the new millennium. However, with the onset of the recession in late 2007, many boomers who would have transitioned into retirement opted to keep working rather than retire at a time of such financial uncertainty. As unemployment rates rose into double figures in many areas of the country, water industry employers were often able to hire from a pool of highly qualified candidates who were attracted by the excellent pay, benefits, and job stability offered by the water/wastewater industry. As a result, the silver tsunami never made landfall. But the wave is building again.
