Machinists make and repair material made out of metals, such as steel and brass. They work with computerized equipment, milling machines, and lathes. The water sector uses many specialized machines and machine parts, so the machinists may:
- make custom replacement parts, such as unusual screws or bolts;
- resurface the faces of metal pieces that must fit together perfectly, such as pump seals and valves throughout the water distribution system; and
- fabricate or balance pump blades and propellers.
